The future of home composting

The Box of Life is empowering communities to turn home food waste into organic fertilizer, from their homes.

Ottawa-based ‘The Box of Life’ is making it possible to convert food waste into organic fertilizer… in your very own kitchen! Akil Mesiwala founded The Box of Life in response to climate change frustration and anxiety –

“What started out as an at-home vermi-composting experiment a few years ago has now turned into a career that I'm really passionate about! I created the box of life because I believe that the humble composting earthworm can reshape our relationship with food waste and rekindle our love for nature in the urban world. We're creating a movement to feed our soils and everyone is invited to join.”

The Box Of Life is a social enterprise, meaning it prioritizes people and planet over profit. Production materials are sourced from local small businesses that share a common goal of protecting the planet's ecosystem. They also encourage zero-waste and resilient food systems via community partnerships, educational workshops and webinars on the benefits of vermicomposting.

Their sustainable at-home composting solution, Worm Studio, uses special composting earthworms to quickly and effortlessly convert kitchen waste into nature's best fertilizer (without the smells or bugs). It has been created for urban living and is a great way to teach children about the importance of natural ecosystems and how to be better stewards of our land.
